I discovered Alpen at an outdoor show a couple of years ago. I got my hands on a few different models and was very impressed by the feel and quality of their binoculars. In the fall I lost my old pair of Bushnell waterproof binoculars and decided it was time for an upgrade. I went with this Apex model mainly because they work so good with my glasses. Being fairly new to hunting it's was amazing to see such a huge difference from my old cheap binoculars. No more fuzzy edges and they work great early in the dawn light. Well worth every penny!
Great optics at a fair price. Between me and the wife we own several pairs of binoculars including a couple set of Alpens. I love the super close focus on the Apex it easily rivals some of the porro binoculars I have. These are always my first choice pair when going out for a hike, as long as the wife doesn't grab them first.
These are my new hunting binoculars! I experience little eye strain looking through these babies and I never had a pair that works to well in the early morning or evening. Nice weight and feel real good in your hands. The reps at the show did a good job of selling me on these but they really didn't need to they are that good.
I've been using these for bird watching the focus isn't really close but they work well enough for me. Nice big lenses for a pair of roof prisms but not too heavy.
I purchased a pair of Alpen Wings 10x42 ED binoculars from one of the company founders at a birding festival last week. I was able to compare them with a pair of $1900 Swarovski binos owned by my friend Julie Zickefoose.
The Alpens do not have the light-gathering and brightness of the Swarovskis, but they don't give much away (at about 1/4 the price). The ED glass gives excellent contrast, on a par with any binoculars I have used.
The quality of construction is superb. These optics aren't going to break. The only thing I would change is to make the removable eyecups fit a bit more tightly, as they have a tendency to get stuck in the rain caps during storage. (These can't be glued on, because they have to be removed for thorough cleaning.)
Overall, I am extremely pleased. I don't expect to have any reason to buy another pair of binos, short of theft or catastrophic damage. In the latter event, the glasses would probably out-perform me anyway.
