Cape May, New Jersey
Cape May is the peninsula at the southern-most tip of the state of New Jersey. It is well known among birders as a top spot with its many refuges and nature preserves.
Every May the Cape May Bird Observatory organizes the annual World Series of Birding which raises money to protect bird habitats.
The observatory also oversees most other birding activities in area, and hosts daily walks throughout the year around the Cape May area. Cape May is the home to many birding authors, the best known being David Allen Sibley, who created his famous The Sibley Guide to Birds while living in Cape May.
The spring and fall seasons are the most popular time to visit Cape May as people from all over the world come to witness thousands of migrating birds passing through the area.
The cape is also one of the best spots on the East Coast for raptors; thousands of migrating hawks can be seen soaring about as they travel to their winter homes. You may also see eagles, vultures, and osprey as well as other birds of prey.
