Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona

The Chiricahua Mountains in South East Arizona are so wonderful for birdwatching, we have already covered one small area within them known as Cave Creek Canyon.

Ultimately the entire mountain range is home to the 12000 acre Chiricahua National Monument, which is chocked full of wonderfully weird hoodoos and other rock formations.

The rest of the mountain range is not to be missed but be warned - this is very rugged country and is best suited for experienced hikers and campers. For those not as hardy, the mountain range offers plenty of easier day trails and even a fair number of winding dirt roads you can drive along.

The Chiricahua Mountains are an essential destination for anyone seeking out the dozens of rare bird species found in the area. The reintroduction of the Thick-billed Parrot to the area has been less than successful due to the increased numbers of predators pushed into the area from loss of their habitats.

However, the area is also home to many types of hummingbirds, woodpeckers and warblers.

The Arizona state bird is the Cactus Wren and you can find a checklist for birding in Arizona here.
