Cimarron National Grassland, KansasCimarron National Grassland covers approximately 521 square miles in Morton County, Kanas. Most of the land is shortgrass prairie and sand sage. The Cimarron River runs through the grassland. Although the banks are lined with lush vegetation, the river itself is usually dry. The grassland is the largest parcel of public land in the state of Kansas.

Numerous recreational activities are available in the grassland. Fishing and hunting are allowed, and are overseen by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Fish available for sport include crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. In the winter, fishing areas are stocked with rainbow trout. Animals hunted in the grassland include quail, pheasant, prairie chicken, pronghorn, and whitetail deer. Check state limits and regulations before setting out.

Cimarron Grassland is also an ideal birdwatching location. Some of the birds observed in the grassland include western tanagers, roadrunners, curve-billed thrashers, scrub jays, and mountain chickadees. Some of the prairie areas offer observation blinds that are available for public use. Call park administration for more information and reservations.
