Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas

Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 65,000 acres in the Felsenthal Basin, located in south-central Arkansas. It is the largest green tree reservoir in the world, and an extensive wetland complex containing a complex system of creeks, sloughs, rivers, and lakes.

It was created in 1970, and is considered one of the the region's richest cultural resources with more than 200 Native American archaeological sites, most of which date back about 5,000 years.

The refuge offers a variety of activities for outdoor vacationers. There are numerous marked hiking trails, and large camping grounds. The area is also ideal for wildlife viewing, and the numerous lakes and rivers offer ample opportunities for boating and fishing. The natural beauty of the refuge makes nearly any spot an ideal location for picnicking.

Felsenthal Refuge boasts the highest number of endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers in the state. It's also home to thousands of resident and migrant waterfowl, as well as marsh and water birds. The most current bird list contains 228 species that have been sighted in the refuge, or in surrounding areas. The list includes such species as the tricolored heron, the wood stork, the red-breasted merganser, the osprey, and the American bald eagle.
