High Island, Texas

High Island is found at the eastern end of Bolivar Peninsula on the southern coast of Texas just east of Galveston Bay.
The area is an important nesting area for many neo-tropical species of migratory birds that winter in South America. High Island has been recognized as an important birding area since the 1940's and The Houston Audubon Society operates four separate sanctuaries around the area.
Boy Scout Wood Bird Sanctuary is open to the public year round and has an extensive system of boardwalks to aide wheelchair-bound visitors.
This four acre park is the headquarters for the the Houston Audubon Society and spring migration makes a spectacular time to visit. The Smith Oaks Sanctuary covers 143 acres of Oak stands, ponds, wetlands, and coastal prairie.
This sanctuary is home of The Rookery; a human-made pond that was donated to the sanctuary in 1994. The pond also contains an island, providing nesting for many waterbirds. The Houston Audobon Society also operates the 9.5 acre Eubanks Woods and the 8.8 acre S.E. Gast Red Bay Sanctuary.
The official bird of the state of Texas is the Northern Mockingbird and you can find a checklist for birding activities in Texas here.
