The Binocular Site
Long Point Provincial Park, Ontario

Long Point Provincial Park is located in Ontario, along 40 kilometers of sand shoreline on Lake Erie. Beaches here are temperate, and the warmth attracts a variety of amphibians, reptiles, and even the only marsupial in North America – the Virginia opossum.
Over 350 species of birds have been identified here, and a large number of them nest for the summer. Nesting birds at Long Point include shrikes, osprey, kinglets, bobwhites, partridges, passenger pigeons, green herons, siskins, larks, swans, wigeons, bitterns, and many more.
During migration season you can expect to see pelicans, ibises, petrels, and eight breeds of hawks. The Long Point Bird Observatory runs bird monitoring and observing programs along with publishing research results.
Biodiversity programs are also available for local and visiting students, along with conferences and other events. Over 250 camping sites are available, both serviced and unserviced. Lynn Valley Trail is a particular favorite, which is in driving distance from Long Point.
Scuba diving has also become popular in the area, with over 200 ship wreck sites to see. Shifting sandbars, strong currents, and storms sunk several boats that now invite scuba diving visitors. See the Long Point Provincial Park website for more information.
The provincial bird of Ontario is the Common Loon and you can find a checklist for birding activities in Ontario here.

Definitely a very beautiful, peaceful spot to observe plant and wild life. It has been designated a World Biosphere Reserve. I end up camping there every summer. Be warned though - the bugs can be bad at the end of August.
