Presque Isle State Park, Pennsylvania

This state park features a sandy peninsula jutting out into Lake Erie, providing a gorgeous coastline.

The isle lends itself to various recreational activities as well as birding, and contains six different ecological zones, making it home to over 320 bird species including many rare and endangered varieties.

It is also a favorite landing spot for migrating species and is particularly popular during March and December when many waterfowl are on the move. May and September are the time for songbird migration and it isn't unusual to see the trees filled with ornament-like birds during these months.

Gull Point, one of the most ecologically diverse areas on Presque Isle, acts as a safe haven for birds migrating annually from the Arctic Circle to South America and back, and has been declared a national park.

The nesting area is closed to public use from April through November, but can be seen from a special observation platform. This ensures birds are protected while remaining visible to the public. Meanwhile the local Audobon Society sponsors a Hawk Watch in April each year along with a monthly newsletter called the Tern of Events.

Ongoing public field trips and meetings are also offered for free by the Presque Isle Audobon Society to take advantage of all the great birding opportunities.

The Pennsylvania state bird is the Ruffed Grouse and you can find a checklist of birds to watch for in Pennsylvania here.
