Audubon Binoculars

Audubon is perhaps the most famous name when it comes to birders. Swift made a smart score when they acquired use of the Audubon name. However, the resulting brand is one that is underappreciated - sometimes dismissed as a novelty or a knockoff, roughly akin to Nike watches. However, many avid Audubon backers claim that these binoculars stand with names like Swarovski and Nikon.

John J. Audubon was famous as an illustrator, explorer and ornithologist. In 1905, two generations after his death, the National Audubon Society was founded. Swift bought exclusive rights to the name for its line of binoculars (with birders in mind, obviously), and they make a worthwhile attempt to live up the Audubon name and spirit.

There are a couple of unique features to Audubon binoculars, not the least of which is that any new pair (2005) over $100 comes with a free field guide to birds from the National Audubon Society. Audubon (and Swift) extends that idea of introducing birding to young people with several pairs of binoculars made especially for kids.

The very basic 4x30 kids' binoculars offer kids a fairly inexpensive introduction to binocular care, birding and other uses. They feature Audubon's lifetime warranty, so your kids can pass them on as a family heirloom as long as they take care of them.

The Swift 804 Audubon's are underrated. They are really a fine pair of binoculars held by many a birder in the same esteem as the finest birding binoculars. Their use in low light is appreciated by too few birders (and even hunters). Pro birders know that low light (dusk or pre-dawn) can be a great time to get a good view of birds that are otherwise harder to spot or track.

Head out on a dark and rainy day at dusk and you might find out what we mean - that red-tailed hawk grounded by the rain is not going anywhere as you steal up close for a better look. With a pair of Swift 804 Audubon's, you'll be able to get a very good view.
