Bausch and Lomb Binoculars

Maker of numerous eye-care products (many people know them for contact lens cleaner); Bausch and Lomb make binoculars, as well. Sort of. Bausch and Lomb actually stopped making binoculars a long time ago (sometime in the 1970's). The name is now made by Bushnell, and they may even be losing interest in the name, since it does not have the same cache it once had.

Nevertheless, some pretty nice binoculars are still made under the name. There are some high end Bausch and Lomb binoculars that retail for over $1000 - $800 from online retailers, that is. They're not just expensive - they're also well loved by binocular users.

Some Bausch and Lomb binoculars
The Bausch and Lomb Legacy 10x25 is a low end compact binocular that delivers surprising clarity. It's durable, with a very comfortable field of view (275 feet at 1,000 yards). The price is what's nice - less than $50.

The Bausch and Lomb NatureView® binoculars use fairly standard 8x30 magnification. Light in weight and featuring center focus, these are ideal for birders and other nature enthusiasts. Porro roof prisms with multi-coatings brighten things very nicely. The big surprise here is a field of view 370 feet at 1000 yards - perfect when you want to scan spinning and diving waterfowl. They're a decent pair of binoculars for $100.

Bausch and Lomb come with a much higher price tag, too, of course. Their Elite are very satisfactory. For example, the 62-1250's deliver crisp, clear images, and they feature water proofing. They're hardy and durable, and they'll cost you a little less than $1000, though you may be able to find them cheaper at auction (online). A quick online search and you may find that Bushnell is not really taking the Bausch and Lomb name in vain.
