Specialty Binoculars

A number of different types of binoculars are considered specialty binoculars. These are designed with very specific uses or activities in mind. When making a binocular purchase, you may think that your only decision is between standard binoculars or binoculars of a special type (such as Zoom or Giant binoculars). The advantage in choosing a pair of specialty binoculars is that many of your decisions are already made for you - by design experts.

The most common types of specialty binoculars include:
  • Astronomy binoculars are a workable alternative to a telescope. A telescope can be difficult to setup and cumbersome to use, where binoculars specially designed for astronomy can be more versatile and even practical in some cases.
  • Marine binoculars come with some built in features such as compass and rangefinder
  • Hunting binoculars are designed to be rugged and durable. Some features such as Zoom might also be valuable
  • Military binoculars are often sold as surplus and are favorites of collectors and other binocular aficionados
  • Birding binoculars are designed with the birding enthusiast in mind. One of the specifications of birding binoculars is that they render color properly
  • Digital Camera binoculars combine digital photography capability with the degree of magnification you expect from binoculars. The result is a neat gadget with a number of specialist applications.

Binoculars

Any of these come with specific features that make them uniquely suited for specific purposes. Within each specialty style, though, there are still considerations you need to bear in mind. Aside from the overall quality, construction, comfort and price, you may need the objective lenses to be a specific size, waterproofing may be a necessity, you may want to know about the accessories available for your binoculars, especially if they are a large or heavy model.
